Anti-Bullying Week – There have been some lovely, worthwhile activities taking place this week as the school supported Anti-Bullying Week. Odd socks were de rigeur on Monday, while various discussions have been taking place in classes throughout the week. This morning, our online assembly drew all the themes together, making the whole initiative a very positive one with a strong message.

Children in Need – A huge thank you to the school community for its fantastic support of our Children in Need activities once again this year. A total of £570 was raised.

Snack – From Monday, we will revert to buying, preparing and sharing snack ourselves for the pupils across the school. Food will of course be prepared safely. We will return to the old system of requesting a £1 contribution per week.

Training Day – The additional training day carried over from the beginning of the Autumn Term has now been allocated. It will now take place on January 5th. The updated date list is attached to the email.

Punctuality – I would be grateful if everybody could ensure that all pupils are inside the building by 9am. There has been an increase in late arrivals over the last couple of weeks and your cooperation would be appreciated.

Christmas – Plans for Xmas are afoot. Each class will perform and record a short item which will be shared. The PTA also have some lovely ideas for Christmas activities. Despite the circumstances of 2020, we want to try and have a special Rhos Street Christmas!

PTA Chocolate – Huge thanks for your chocolate donations. Your support is appreciated so much!

Students of the Week – Students of the Week were Emily, Evan, Ayla, Isla, Jacob, Hannah, Ruben, Amelia, Mia-Rose, Merry, Cadie, Finley, Cayden and Leo. Alys also received a Welsh Award. Well done to them all.

Children in Need – We’ve had a great day here in school, all in the name of Children in Need. Spots, stripes, pyjamas and all manner of outfits were seen today. Some lovely activities also took place and the children have had lots of fun. Thank you for your donations. The total will be shared when it’s all counted.

PTA – Despite all the Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions, the PTA are busy in the background thinking of fundraising ideas and activities for the children. Next Friday will be a PTA own clothes day and if anybody is able to send in chocolate as a donation for PTA prizes then we’d be very grateful. The PTA are also organising a Xmas raffle and if you have any prizes that you are able to donate, then once again it would be appreciated. Please see Lucy Purvis, Julie Brixey, Jenny Johnson or pop into the office if you are able to help. When we finally have our new yard built, we will of course be investing in some outdoor resources and the PTA money raised will go towards those purchases.

Craft Fair – A Covid-19 safe Craft Fair is taking place outdoors at Ruthin Gaol on Sunday 15th November 10am-4pm. A great opportunity to support small local businesses, as well as a chance to get out with the family following the recent lockdown.

Anti-Bullying Week – Next week, there will be activities taking place in class and on Monday, everybody is invited to come into school wearing odd socks to celebrate how it’s good to different.

Lost Property – We have an accumulation of items in school which we would normally lay out on a table at the front of the school for people to claim. Covid-19 restrictions now make this impossible, I’m afraid. If you are looking for a particular item of clothing that has been mislaid, please pop into the office to claim it. At the end of term we will donate all remaining items to charity.

Students of the Week – Our Students of the Week were Sam, Louie, Neve, ArloJ, Piper, Penny, Charlea, Joe, Ryan, Scarlet, Poppy, Leo, Tyler, Jolie, Elliott and Xavier. Noah was also awarded a Welsh certificate. Wewll done to them all.

Children in Need Colouring Competition – Well done to Freya, Louie, Rayne, Claire, Leon, Charlotte, Stacey and Lexie who were selected as winners in the colouring competition.

With the US Election, Bonfire Night, plus Wales coming out of lockdown as England enters theirs, it’s been a very apt time to hold ‘Have Your Say’ week as we consider the implications our votes have on the people that govern us. Activities and discussions have taken place in class and my online assembly focused on Wales, Britain and America’s systems of allowing its people to have a say, make a difference and engage with current affairs. Personally, it’s astounded me that my youngest son, who usually talks of nothing but football, Tik Tok, Fortnight and YouTube came to me last night and asked if all the postal votes in Pennsylvania had been counted yet, so there is certainly interest! We live in historic times and I hope the pupils appreciate that fact and will look back, remember and tell their own children about it in years to come.

Nursery Registrations for Reception Class – Some Parents of Nursery pupils still need to register their child for next September’s Reception Class. Please complete your applications if you are yet to do so.

Ventilation – As part of our measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 in school, we are required to keep windows and external doors open to increase ventilation. This, as the weather gets colder, impacts on the temperature of the building, so I would recommend an additional layer on the pupils in order for them to stay warm while we try to keep everybody safe. We will endeavour to strike a sensible balance between temperature and ventilation.

Children in Need – A Covid-safe Children in Need day will be held next Friday. Please see the poster attached to the email for details.

Remembrance – Next week is Remembrance Week. The poppies and other items will be available in exchange for a donation to The British Legion. There will be class activities as well as two minutes’ silence held at 11am on Wednesday.

Harvest Donations – Thanks again for your Harvest food donations. They were handed over to Ruthin Food Bank this week and their representatives were very grateful.

We reach half term with a sense of déjà-vu hanging over us. We now re-enter a period of lockdown and although school will be closed for the holiday, we will reopen for all pupils as normal on November 2nd, despite all other restrictions remaining in place for another week. I am pleased our doors will remain open following the break, so that we can continue to build the momentum established so far over the autumn term. The children continue to settle back to full time education well, following such a long spell away from the classroom. I hope the parental consultations and the preliminary information sent beforehand has been useful in enabling you to support and encourage your child to progress over the coming months. The partnership between home and school has become ever more important in these testing times. All the staff have had much to contend with as we readjust and react to ongoing demands and guidance. They are all to be congratulated for their efforts in difficult circumstances. I am as ever, very grateful to them all as I’m sure you are too. They endeavour to keep everybody safe while still educating our pupils to the customary high standards. I hope you enjoy some good quality family time over the next week and although activities away from home will be limited, I’m sure the opportunity for some rest and recuperation will be welcomed by many. Free School Meals – Welsh Government has confirmed that holiday provision for families with pupils on the free school meals register will continue up to and including the Easter holidays 2021. Harvest Activities – We have been unable to hold our Harvest Service this year, due to Covid-19. However, class Harvest activities, have been taking place and we collected food donations in aid of Ruthin Food Bank. Thank you for your contributions. Students of the Week – Our Students of the Week were: Abigail, Eliza, Billy, Nimrod, Darcie, Eliza, Annabelle, Mia Rose, Joe, Ryan, Jay, Leighton, Willow, Maya and Declan.

PTA Halloween Competition – Thank you for all the entries in this competition. A winner was selected from each class and they were as follows: George Williams, Ayla Derbyshire, Henry Musgrave, Thea Littler-Healy, Sofia Argentieri, Daniel Begg, Kian Thomas and Chloe Galeandro. The entries of all pupils who submitted by yesterday’s deadline were displayed on screen in today’s assembly. Thank you to Lucy Purvis for organising the prizes plus the treat that all the pupils in the school received today from the PTA.

Hello Yellow – Thank you for your donations on Hello Yellow Day. We raised £181.77 for Young Minds UK. You can see lots of crazy pictures and videos on our Twitter feed.

Operation Bang – Please refer to the document attached to the email for information sent by North Wales Police regarding ensuring safe Halloween and Bonfire Night activities.

Year 6 Brynhyfryd Open Evening – I hope our Year 6 pupils found the Virtual Open Evening held by Ysgol Brynhyfyd last night of use.

‘Have Your Say’ Week – The first week after half term will be a citizenship week. Our pupils will be familiarised with the British parliament in Westminster, Welsh Senedd in Cardiff and also get to discuss the forthcoming Presidential Election in the USA.

Remembrance Week – During the following week we will commemorate Remembrance. We have poppies and other resources provided by The Royal British Legion, that pupils can bring a donation in exchange for. Also, the image attached to the email also highlights Remembrance activities being held at St. Peter’s Church.

Children in Need – We will be supporting this annual event once again this year. It takes place on November 13th. Details of activities will be shared straight after half term.

Covid-19 – Over the half term break, if you have any information to share regarding any Covid testing in your families, I’d be grateful if you could keep me informed by email. The school is required to react to any positive Covid-19 tests quickly and to liaise with the Test, Trace, Protect team to contact all those who subsequently need to self isolate. Your cooperation here would be appreciated.

Hello Yellow – It’s been an emotional day here in school. A day full of smiles, laughs, reflections plus a few tears too – and all in the memory of Jill, who we remembered fondly today on the anniversary of her sad death. It was also the day we officially opened ‘Jill’s Bench’. The bench has been placed in a lovely location – in the garden area here at Rhos Street School. The area was made ever more special by the beautiful colours, flowers, balloons, lanterns and newly laid plants, that over the coming years will grow and bloom and blossom. Thank you to Mrs Davies and Year 5 for their brilliant work – it looks really special. The bench surrounds a very old oak tree, which will have stood here for many, many years. The Oak tree is one of the most loved trees in the world, and is a symbol of strength, morale, resistance and knowledge. Oak is often associated with honour, nobility and wisdom, so it is a very apt tree as a home for this special bench that’s been placed around it.

It will be a place of friendship where people can meet, be happy and laugh, or indeed be a place of comfort where you can talk about how you feel to someone. It will also be a place to remember Jill and look at a plaque bearing her name and a sentence that says that “Her laugh, smile and memory will always be here at Rhos Street School.” It’s a place to remember her with a smile and be happy, because that’s what she would have wanted.

We’ve had a lovely day, wearing yellow, telling jokes and taking silly pictures and it was really special to welcome Jill’s daughters, Amy and Michelle to share the moment with us. They were also pupils here at Rhos Street School many years ago, so it was particularly poignant.

Parental Consultations – Please refer to the email I sent on Wednesday afternoon regarding the parental consultations. By sharing this information from my perspective before the consultations, it will allow teachers to specifically discuss your child’s progress and needs going forward on the night, rather than have to explain the extensive information in that email.

Halloween Activities – A PTA fundraiser has been organised for the last day of term. Pupils can bring £1 and dress up in Halloween costumes. I’d be grateful if they do not bring additional props. There is also a drawing competition and details are included on the attached image. Entries cost 50p. A template to colour in will be sent home with Nursery and Reception, the older pupils have a free choice of drawing a Halloween themed picture on a sheet of A4. A winner from each class will be selected, while all entries will be rewarded with a small treat.

Flu Immunisations – These will take place on Monday.

Local Parking – Please take care with your vehicles when using local roads and estates to park in order to drop off your pupils. Many thanks.

Sanitising Gel – Please can Infant children not be sent to school with their own anti-bacterial gel. As they are being sold in all sort of colours and designs, we are concerned they will be misused. Some pupils have skin rashes so have their own gel and that is fine. Please ensure the class teacher is given the gel to look after.

One thing that has delighted me since we started the school year, is that the pupils have been really engaged in recent themed weeks and this week’s National Libraries theme has been no different. Thank you for your photographic contributions. It’s been lovely to share examples of pupils reading to brothers, sisters, dogs, cats, fish, teddies and grannies in all manner of places. I hope it helps foster an ongoing love of reading, which will only help fire the imagination as well as develop Literacy skills ever further!

To see all of our pupils wearing a sticker with my face (and age) upon it today has also given me a giggle! I never thought my ‘Big Birthday’ would be recognised in such a way, but it’s certainly made me chuckle and I’m grateful to everybody for the good wishes! I’d also like to extend congratulations to Leanne who has also reached the same milestone – a couple of days before me too I might add! Many happy returns to her!

Hello Yellow Day – Next Friday will be ‘Hello Yellow’ day. On this day, we will remember and celebrate Jill Jackson, our valued staff member who so sadly passed away twelve months ago. She was passionate about pupil wellbeing and helped launch our ELSA sessions – which have given many pupils emotional support over the years. On Friday, we ask pupils to come to school dressed in yellow and send in a £1 contribution to the Young Minds charity, which supports children’s mental health. We also ask our pupils to choose their favourite joke, which they will perform/recite in class (keep them short and clean!) We’ll also take some silly ‘photo booth’ photos with yellow props and hopefully there will be lots of laughs and smiles as we remember Jill. Finally, the Junior pupils plus staff will assemble in the garden area to open ‘Jill’s Bench’. This new bench surrounds the oak tree and will be a place where pupils can befriend, support and help one another in Jill’s memory. I am sure it will be a poignant day full of smiles.

National Libraries Week – If National Libraries has kick started reading at home this week for your family, please be aware that there is a free course available to parents, which offers guidance on how to support your child’s reading at home. Halloween Competition – Please see the email’s attached image for details of Hill & Roberts’ Halloween Competition. Children are asked to make their own Halloween masks and email them to the address provided.

Music Lessons – Payment for music lessons has now been set up on Parent Pay. These payments are for lessons for this year and also for outstanding payments from last year. Many thanks.

PC Llinos – PC Llinos will make her first visit of the year on Wednesday and speak to all Junior classes.

While many school activities, particularly those taking place off-site have been restricted, recently we have had a couple of themed weeks, namely Recycle Week and Bike to School Week. I must say I have been delighted with the response. It has been wonderful to see the range, number and quality of different models made from recycling materials. Thank you for supporting your child at home with them and also for getting the photos to us. Participants have been rewarded today! I’ve also been very encouraged by the number of pupils who have cycled or scooted to school and have sent photos of themselves on their bikes. We’ve had some fun today testing if our cycle helmets are safe and also had some pictures taken. Thank you for supporting these themed activities. They’ve certainly helped to raise awareness of the importance of both recycling and active, healthy travel. I hope the messages remain at the forefront of our pupils minds going forward.

Libraries Week – Next week’s theme is Libraries Week which takes place nationally from October 5-10th. We encouraged our pupils to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, Silly Squad https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/, but have not yet taken the opportunity to celebrate their involvement. If your child completed the challenge during the holidays, please send/ email/tweet me a photo of them holding their certificate, along with perhaps their favourite book for me to share in next week’s virtual online assembly. We’ll look to highlight any activities involving authors, stories, novels and poems that are taking place in class on our Twitter page, so please keep an eye out and as before, please encourage your child to get involved. Many thanks – seeing photos of our pupils succeeding in various activities make for a much better view than seeing my face on screen!

PTA – It is unfortunate that the normal range of PTA activities cannot take place in the current circumstances. We still want to consider ideas for some PTA activities that work in the ‘new normal’, to share them and also communicate with parents who are interested. If you are a new parent or a current parent who would like to be kept in the loop with all things PTA, then please email rhosstreetpta@gmail.com, so that you can be added to the mailing list.

Breakfast Club – Numbers for Breakfast Club are healthy. This is a good thing as the service provides working parents with the support they need. However, during the current ongoing Covid-19 restrictions please do not send your child to Breakfast Club for any other reason other than for essential childcare purposes. This is in order to ensure we reduce potential congestion and help keep our contact groups distanced in the hall. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Recycling Week – You’ll also get to see a whole host of recycling models from our creative pupils on our Twitter page. They are fantastic!

Social Distancing and Local Lockdown – You will be aware that Denbighshire has had local lockdown restrictions imposed. This makes it ever more important we play our part to ensure that the virus does not spread, by following the guidelines. Please remain disciplined regarding socially distancing. 2 metres is what we as adults are asked to observe and it is quite a wide gap if you measure / visualise it. We need to be able to say with as much clarity as possible to any contact tracers who may consult with us that adults have maintained that distance. When you are picking up and dropping off, please be mindful of this by arriving on time and leaving promptly in order to reduce congestion. If you are waiting to meet others, please do not wait on pathways, but rather arrange to convene in an agreed area at the front of school away from the flow of human traffic. Many thanks once again.

Parents’ Evening – On the week beginning October 19th, we will hold parental consultations here at the school. We feel it is important to have a face to face meeting rather than a telephone call and will put measures in place so that it can be done safely. Appointment times will be shared in advance.

Students of the Week – Our Students of the Week were Ella, Eden, Hugo, Isla, Nimrod, Eliza, Scarlet, Seren, Ruben, Poppy, Liam, Charlotte, Maya, Tyler, DanCJ, and Logan. Billy received a Welsh award and Daniel also received an Over and Above award, recognising he has become a free reader.
